While there are those who have started at four months, this is more of an "advanced" readiness rather than the norm. I suggest you wait closer to six months due to allergy issues, but if the baby shows signs of readiness earlier then introduce cereals only until six months, when you can broaden their palate.
Start with cereals, then purees, then foods with lumpier textures at 8-9 mos. Ultimately the baby should be eating from the table after a year.
Also keep in mind that before a year, your baby needs the calories in milk (formula/BM) so do not on your own do away with milk, esp. if the baby is younger than 8-9 mos. As the baby ages naturally, he/she's intake of milk will go down and solids will go up, but I don't suggest you rush things.

ETA: Cereal = rice only, my mistake. Oatmeal I suggest leaving until six months, as it is lumpier. Do NOT feed wheat cereal due to allergy issues, I've been told wheat cereal is a nono until one year.

I have two girls, 2 and 3 yrs old. When both of them were about 6 months old neither of the two would eat baby food. So, When I was started cooking dinner for the night I would make sure that I would get what I was cooking out before I seasoned it ( just because some seasoning could hurt their tummies) I would feed them and they loved it. Both my girls were born little 3 lbs. 13 ozs. and 4 lbs. 5 ozs. Now they both eat me out of house and home. Use your mothers instinct and go with it. Remember NO ONE knows your child better then YOU do.

i have 5 children, i started weaning all of them from about 3 - 4 months, some earlier than others, they were waking more, hungrier and generally milk wasn't satisfying them. Health visitors may say 6 months now, I don't know, but when I had my 1st daughter 14 years ago it was from 3 months. So I would say no earlier than 3 months, but you are the best judge of whether your baby needs solid food or not. Just a bit of baby rice to start with mixed with formula or breast milk, once a day. good luck

Its so different from child to child - Our little one started with Level 1 baby food at 8 weeks and moved onto very soft solids around 3 1/2 months.

I have 2 children I exclusivly breastfed until they were both 6 months... then started them on cereal and moved up to stage 1 foods after that.... along with breastfeeding but i would say wait until your child is at least sitting up 5-6 months but no earlier than that...
then again everyone is different

Start no earlier than 4 months, and then only with baby rice, then pureed cooked pear, then gradually other fruits and veg. Introduce new foods at intervals of at least 3 days to avoid the development of food allergies. You may want to invest in one or two of Gina Ford's books (see link below) - they are the closest I have found to an instruction manual for babies and they work, at least everything in them has worked for our three (6, 3 and 1)

i've got been instructed via Dr's, nurses etc that the present suggestions are 4 - 4.5months for formula fed toddlers. i all started my daughter at 4 months as she regarded extra effective than waiting. She's now almost 5 months and has almost all her solids as finger ingredients. in case you experience she's waiting then choose for it :)

you can start at 3 months giving the baby some Baby cereal mixed with formula, and you can start the baby on 1st foods fruits and veggies, but remember the baby needs breast milk or formula, which ever you do until they are a year old. stay away from fruit juices because this will give them diarrhea, and your doctors should tell you these things, and if you are not getting answers then you should find another doctor. this is commen practice for a pediatric ion to give you pamphlets and information on your child's milestones at the well baby checkups.
