Because Marlon Brando wore them in A Street Car Named Desire. His character. Stanley Kowalski, was abusive to both his wife and sister-in-law. It's also a slang street term referring to Italian-Americans.

It's called a wife beater because usually it's worn by men on those movies and shows that sit around in front of the tv with food stains on their white tank shirts( the wife beater) and who beat up their wives so thats where the name came from
The name came from the stereotype!!

It was originally called a "white beater" Like a plain white shirt to beat around in and they are cheap so it doesn't matter if you ruin them. Then somehow it became wife beater, I guess because trashy wife beater type people wear them in movies and such

It didn't work for your mom, but it does work for you. As long as you aren't calling her "mom" in the bedroom, then go for it. However, I do think its really important for kids to see their parents have a happy and healthy friendship/relationship. You want to make sure you are appropriately affectionate, really enjoy each others company and spend plenty of time with each other without the kids. If your kids are young enough, several times a week you should be putting them to bed because its mom and dad's date night. When they are older, make sure you regularly get a babysitter and go out. You are teaching them how to be a husband and a wife, as well as mom and dad. Your mom probably means well, but its not her family.

It's a stereotypical word. My teacher told us that Italian men wore them all of the time and people thought that they all beat their wives. Hence wife beater.

Watch "Cops". 9 times outta 10, any time there's domestic violence and they go to arrest the guy, he's wearing a "wife beater" (white sleeveless shirt).
