I assume you are talking about the TV series? There is already a movie title The Red Dwarf. It is about a dwarf. Quite a good film. As for a movie based on the TV series, I have not heard anything about it. It does seem to be something that is done with a lot of American TV shows. I don't think the same is true for British TV shows.

A pilot episode movie was made for the American market using a mainly American cast , with the exception of Robert Llewelyn who remained in the role of Kryten (his was evidently the only accent the yanks could understand). This caused quite an uproar with the rest of the cast and evidently Craig Charles still isnt talking to Robert Llewelyn.
The downside is it proved to be a big flop , so the american series was cancelled and this put the brakes on the film version (for now). If you want to see how bad it was (and it is truly dreadful) the pilot can be downloaded from most of the torrent sites (I saw it on one downloaded from limewire).

As with so many of you, I've been hearing about this for SO long. So long in fact, that I'm starting to lose hope we will ever see this. I was on the official RD site yesterday and saw nothing new regading the movie; however, if you are interested in movie spoofs be sure to check out the calendar: RED DWARF GOES TO HOLLYWOOD. I'd love to see them do a Series IX and X made completely of these spoofs if they aren't going to do their own movie!

The following is from the faq on the Red Dwarf website:-
"Question: When will the Red Dwarf Movie be released?
Answer: Production on the movie will begin shortly following a period of pre-production, with a release date to follow. Additional information on the film can be found on the Movie Deck."

I checked the internet movie database and nothing, so it's not reached pre-production (www.imdb.com) They know everything about a film as soon as it's been given the green light.

The movie was all set to be made on the tails of Hitchhikers however as it wasn't the huge success it was hoped it would be it got put on the back burner. Then Craig Charles had his little 'indiscretion' and that set it back further. The problem has always been finding a financial backer as i understand it.

They so have to, this is one series that i miss and could so work on the big screen.
I have suggestions for casting though if not original cast:
Kryton - Will Farrel
Cat - Eddie Murphy
Rimmer - Ben Stiller
Lister - Adam Sandler
I reckon that would be classic

IMDB and the official sites say nothing about it so I'd assume no movie at the moment.
