They say that there's nothing new under the sun, and I would agree. However, there are perfectly new takes on things. Look at the style of Sin City, for example, the format of it. I can name revolutionary films over the last decade. The first Matrix film was such a film, although, however, it was based in a lot of material the Wachowski's knew, yet it was an origional and masterful use of that material in a way no one had yet used it.
A lot of movies these days are remakes, if you want to check a film just go to IMDB. Hell, even this year's Best Picture, The Departed, was based on a foreign film. There's origionality, but I believe it's more in the extrapolation of the material than the actual material itself.

Unfortunately, yes. It would seem like a vast majority of movies, and TV shows now are remakes or reworkings of past plots and concepts. It's not always true, but look at how many times the movie "Pride and Prejudice" has been released - most recently twice in two years (2004 as "Bride and Prejudice" a Bollywood version and 2005 with Keira Knightley). Movie plots are being taken from comic books on a regular basis now, too. The same can be said about TV. If something works in one country, they rework it all over the world. Look at how popular "Who Want's to be a Millionaire" became. It started as a British game show. "Survivor" started as a Brit show too, with a much longer duration.
It is a hope that someday soon we will get a rash of new dreamers who will be able to come up with semi-original concepts that will be entertaining as well as thought provoking.

No, it just feels that way sometimes because Hollywood DOES occasionally remake an older film or re-do a foreign one. I'd put it at no more than 1/4 of Hollywood movies, if that.

This is true. For example "Pearl Harbor" is the modern day version of the classic "From Here to Eternity". "The Preacher's Wife" was originally made as "The Bishop's wife" in the 50's or 60's. And how many versions of "A Christmas Carol" have you seen? ("Scrooged") or "Romeo and Juliet"? "The Nutty Professor" was made famous by Jerry Lewis LONG before Eddie Murphy ever came along. "The Fog", "Superman", "Sabrina", "Poseidon" .... it's ALL been done before. Same goes for most of the music you hear now.

some (many) are...for example:
"yours, mine & ours" original version starred Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball...remake came out in 2005 or 2006
"Father of the Bride"...original version starred Spencer Tracy, remake had Steve Martin
"Cheaper by the Dozen"...remake had Steve Martin
"Sabrina" (late 80's or early 90's) had Harrison Ford...original came out in 40's or 50's
"West Side Story" is a re-telling of "Romeo and Juliet"
"The Lion King" is "Hamlet"
"MacHomer" is "MacBeth"
it applies to tv shows too....
British tv show "Til Death Do Us Part" was inspiration for "All in the Family"
"Three's Company" was inspired by (and heavily based on) British tv show "Man About the House"
these are just the examples i can think of off the top of my head...i'm sure there are others.

Yes. My theater appreciation professor told me that it is impossible to come up with a totally original movie. (I disagreed! I've got some clever plots!) Its always a combination of scenarious expounded upon. Supposedly. He was a master of his field, but also and arrogant @rs h 0le.
