Heavy Metal? Rock? They're too tongue-in-cheek to be hard core...Glam Rock, maybe?

They both fit muliple subgenres of what is known as ROCK.

Any music where the lyrics of the song are given sixteen beats per poetic line is what is known as Rock. Both of these bands fit.

Any band that has more than two electric guitars, where the guitars are usually given more prominence than the vocalists is called 'heavy metal' because of the heavier prominence given to the metal strings of the guitar.. as in they're heavy on the metal and light on the voice. Both of those bands fit that mold.

Since the word 'glamour' was coined to be a code word for 'sexy' back when the word 'sexy' was being censured in newspapers around the world, any rock band whose performances or lyrics contain any kind of sexy content can be considered to be 'glam rock'. Since both of these bands fit the definition of singing about sexuality, they fit the term.

Back when I was in high school, the only group more 'hard core' than AC/DC was Pink Floyd, but then, the term 'hard core' really doesn't have a definition. Every time anybody tries to define it, they try in vain, so, while you might not consider them to be Hard Core, I most definitely still do.

They both, at least in their heyday, were what would also be considered 'progressive rock' in that they both took great risks on their lyrics, vocal styles, costume, and performance, which wound up being imitated quite a bit by other bands and performers over the years, so it was they who were progressive and took the lead to be followed by the masses.

The general umbrella is definitely Rock but these sub-genres are so subjective that you can never really know these days. Metal purists would scoff at the idea of either of these bands being Heavy Metal. I don't find either band bad and have enjoyed their music. At this point in time, they can be considered Classic Rock, definitely 80's music.

Glam Rock... Hmmmm... Can someone define that? My understanding is that it was a big 70's music movement. Glam Rock is more about outrageous costumes and performance than the music itself. KISS can probably be considered Glam Rock. Twisted Sister definitely. AC/DC not so much. That's all a matter of opinion, though. Musical genres have so many gray areas so it's hard to be conclusive about anything. [o=

For AC/DC I would go with Rock. Twisted Sister was a "hair band" I guess at this point (showing my age) they are probably classic rock :)
