best you can hope for is slightly damaged files or a fragmented hard drive
at worst, you have a virus.

Check the hard drive using Scandisk, then Defragment the disk also (defrag may take some time), also make sure you have run an antivirus scan on the comp, as some viruses can cause spontenious reboots and sudden system crashes, make sure, as was previously advised run "Msconfig" and remove all non essential files from startup (make sure to only remove ones that you know what they do!!)

a hard drive is like a library with out a librariean, I.E. the books never get put back where they came from, the comp puts them back where it sees most convienent, which is not alyways good for system preformance, the defragmenter is like a librarian, it archives data in order of how much it is used so data that is less used is put to the back, and free space is left last.

it may be nessecary to Format your harddrive, which will result in needing to start the PC off again from scratch

you may have a virus which can slow things down. get it check asap before it does any damage. you could also be maxed out on your memeory space so delete any unwanted programmes. also you may need to defragment your hard drive. this sorts out all your files and saves them in all the same palce rather than in several places.
if it still plays up then take it to PC world for a check up.
