st georges day should be made a public holiday with parades and fun fairs to promote the english culture, it would catch on in places like america and australia to where there is a large english population and would rival st paddys day or even better it as a celebrated festival....my opinion, whats yours?

because St George was Turkish...

I have nothing against it, but I doubt it would be approved as a bank holiday ...

There is a petition going round on the internet getting people to sign up for St Georges Day to be made a public holiday! Personally I think it should be celebrated. We have a lot to be proud of - and I want another day off a year!

Erm isn't a lot of the St Paddy's day clebration down to those ever so talented boys and girls at th eGuiness marketing department? Yes i think it is.

Whilst I can see the point where the suspicions of a celebration of Englishneess being seen as a right wing act (by those who wish to hi jack it as such and by those who wish to appear liberal) have come from. St Davids and St Andrew's aren,t celebrated in the same way as Paddy's and this is not seen as some liberal conspiracy...

I know its crazy!!! I went to Malta and they have a the greatest St George's party ever!!! a whole weeks worth! I'll never forget it. That's how we should celebrate it here! but due to the crap POLITICALLY CORRECTNESS we must not offend those who don't even recognise our country's saint! Yet as you say its OK to celebrate everyone courses. What happened to equal rights and what was the other one.....moral understanding of other cultures? Seems to me that St George was left out in the cold...And how can some people say its racist? whats racist about wanting to celebrate your own saint? the patron saint of England...Fly the flag put George back on his horse and parade him in the streets! !!!

I hate the fact that people say its because we're a multi nation. So Ireland, Scotland and Wales aren't? what a load of rubbish.

My mate owns a pub called The George and we celebrate St.Georges Day (23rd April) more than St. Patrick's Day. We're English not Irish so thats why we celebrate St.Georges Day.

And I'm not racist saying all this, I'm just a proud Englishman sick of being told that to raise our flag and celebrate our patron saint day may offend others.

Absolute nanny state, sort it out government!!!

We're not allowed to. Any celebration of 'Englishness' brands us as racist bigots. The English flag is reserved for football hooligans and the English rose has been stolen by a political party. The Royal Family are German, the Prime Minister, Chancellor and Home Secretary are all Scots; we are envied and hated in equel measure by our nearest neighbours. Not a lot to celebrate, is there?

Its because the town hall tw*ts that try to control our lives have decided that being English, being proud to be English and celebrating being English might be offensive to those who arent English. So we arent allowed to mention it under pain of being labelled racist.
Never mind, we still have St Davids, St Patricks, St Andrews, Diwali, Eid, Ramadan, Yom Kippur, Hannukah etc to look forward to. They are ok because they arent English and we have to embrace other cultures dont we?
Im not saying I have a problem with that, but why must we forget our own culture into the bargain?

Its about time we did celebrate it!! Obviously the fact that Paddys have a great weekend every year on the 17th March is nowt to do with the fact that they are beer-swigging Piss eds!! LOL ONLY JOKIN!!! In this country we are so quick to allow all other cultures the right to celebrate their events that I think we forget our own!! I reckon we genuine Brits are getting totally confused now!! I mean they even sell EID Advent Calenders at Xmas!!!

I think you'll find there will be a few problems what with flying the English flag being a criminal offence (practacly) in some parts of the countery. Seriously, everyone knows that patriotism is just another word for racism, oh except for in every other country in the world!!
