don't try norton, it's probably the worst product on the market. Update your magafee, I had a similiar problem where I was getting a pop up saying that i had a virus on my computer and to click here to get rid of it. I updated my anti-virus and there was something to get rid of the pop-up. It's most likely a form of spyware on your computer.

All that pop-ups are simply a fake. They want you to click them and visit so that website. You could get viruses like this, but remember: a pop-up window can't detect so fast if you have viruses on your computer (only special sites do this and they are the big companies, such as BitDefender, NOD32 etc.). Before verify if your computer has viruses, you should take a look at that site - what the others say about it etc.
To deactivate pop-ups you should say what browser do you use. In case you use Firefox you should go to:
Tools - Options - Content - check "Block pop-up windows" - click Exceptions and delete that sites you don't want to get pop-ups from (here will be shown all your accepted websites). In case you don't use Firefox, you should do it or, if you don't want to do that, you should upgrade to the last version of your browse (Internet Explorer 7, Opera 10 I think, Firefox 2). Use Yahoo! search to find their official site. Good luck!

If you are getting these popups regardless of what web sites you visit, you probably have spyware on your computer. One big way to find out is use Internet Explorer with random trusted sites. Close it out then use Windows Explorer to just view your local folders. If you get popups in both of these test runs, you have some sort of malware on your PC.

I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. Use these tools carefull as they are not perfect and can misreported perfectly harmless files as bad things. Before you download and install these applications, Trend-Micro's FREE online anti-virus, HouseCall, now scans for spyware, malware, grayware, and everything bad under the sun.

Last but not least, check out Symantec as they have pages dedicated to specific PC exploits, their symptoms, and non-software fixes. Often, they make cleaner programs that can remove individual instances of select exploits. It can take several scans, lots of rebooting, and exploring in Safe Mode to get every bad nugget off your PC but, in the end, it'll run much better than before.

Personally, I never rely on a single anti-virus app for protection. AVG catches things Avast! does not and vice versa. Then there is McAfee, NAV, PC Cillin, and many others.. All of them get the job done but none of them are truly complete.

I had the same thing keep happening to me. These pop-ups are like spy ware in and of themselves. Download System Mechanic (you should be able to try it free for 30 days). Run the protection scan and repair, and it will stop these pop-ups. Then activate the system guard to keep them from coming back. It is the only thing that worked for me. Norton's anti-virus recognized the pop-ups as spy ware but did not stop them.

seems you have inadvertantly downloaded some antivirus faker program into your machine(which scams you by saying there are viruses there - that no other program can find>that is unusual isn't it?<...so it is part of their sales technique)...to say you have a bug and only by buying their program can it be eliminated.
They can be a pain to get rid of. I think- though I havn't tried it - is to go the "restore route" after you find the program that got in and uninstalled/deleted it. Otherwise do a lot of googleing of the "program " to figure out how to get rid of it.
Sorry can't help you anymore than that, it really depends on "what" antivirus faker got in. I have used ad-aware(from lavasoft) and spybot with no help in this area as it is a legit program.

It's a Smitfraud infection, which cannot be detected by anti-virus software like McAfee. I recommend that you download the free Spyware Terminator, update it and then scan your computer to get rid of the pop-up.

This isn't actually a virus,it is what's known as SPYWARE / MALWARE.
Advertisers use this to get you to buy their products.
You can get a two week trial of TUNE-UP UTILITIES free from www.download.com and type ''tune up'' in the searchbar.
Download the trial and go to OPTIMIZE AND IMPROVE,,,when you've clicked that,,simply run a ''1-click maintainance'' on your PC

This should free up space and get rid of unwanted programs from your hard drive and also your start menu.

HOPE YOU GET IT SORTED SOON !!
