Desire is the continuation of the old practice (past karma) of wanting to enjoy the physical / wordly pleasures which are momentary in nature. That is why Budhaa said no more desires and you would see the light of divinity and the bliss!!!!

In English every word has a meaning. But, you see ,if you carefully observe(not see), you can understand the different shade it has ,that is the subtle difference in meaning.
All tree and plant leaves are normally called GREEN.But you quite distinguishably see them all separate even when mixed This is because thee is a shade difference in colour.
Similarly DESIRE.You can't sat say it is same as WANT.
Want is some thing you like to have.
But DESIRE has some some slight different tinge, you can see below.

Desire=A wish to obtain,a craving,to wish and long for,

It has a requesting nature in it as you can see in sentence'' The Headmaster desires to see your parent''

Some times DESIRE is used to express sexual urge or appetite.

So , the desire is used accordingly.

In psychoanalysis desire is something that you want but can not have because it is essentially in conflict with the established order and it is impossible to satisfy it. However, it directs your thoughts, actions and decisions in an important way. Different from a wish, desire never comes true and is essentially related to the unconsciousness.
