I'm an American living in the Netherlands and I see how this country prospers from decriminalizing marijuana. It's pathetic how my own country is too stubborn and blind to see the BENEFITS. The money goes to schools, health care, roads, etc and we alllllllll know how America's schools are becoming crap, the health care has been crap for years now and the roads in many areas are deplorable. That's just to name a few.
I hope that one day our government will wake up and realize how badly they've been screwing their own people. But alas, they'd rather spend millions of dollars a year on the "war on drugs" that they've been losing from the word go. For every $5M of marijuana they seize, there's $10M a mile away that they don't know about.
It's a never ending "problem" for them but they are far too ignorant to care who they bring down in the process. They not only bring down the economy (they certainly aren't trying to help it either), as well as schools and the like. They need to stop pissing away OUR tax dollars and start taxing small amounts of marijuana and put that money back into the country. We could quickly alleviate a MASSIVE amount of our country's debt as well as bring in a safe and solid income for our own people.
Along with those changes, I'm almost positive there would be a noticeable (everything takes time!) decrease in drug related crimes. Why? There'd be no "need" for some thug "guarding" the local drug corner and he'd be out of a job because all of his customers go to the local headshop and buy their own and do so legally. So not only have we freed up the use for police force, further allowing law enforcement to focus on far more important things such as abductions, rapes, mollestation, murder, etc but we'd also give those "thugs" a reason to find a different "occupation."
It's sad, just sad.

Now here is where I get blasted by brother cops.....
I think it should be legalized and treated exactly like alcohol with the laws concerning age of use, driving, sale etc. Why? Because we all admit that small amounts we "dump" on the ground. Now bust someone with a bail and they go to jail. But if you catch a minor with a beer or 4 they may get it poured out. Same thing with marijuana. If you bust a minor with 20 cases of beer in his vehicle - you do something more.
There was a time when alcohol was illegal and we treated it the same. I say legalize it. Will I smoke? Who knows..maybe. But I had plenty of beer dumped on my shoes as a minor and it hasn't been a gateway drug to anything other than a more expensive brand. Marijuana - in my opinion - is the same. It is only a gateway drug if the gate is partially opened already.

Cannabis isn't addictive although the tobacco it's rolled in is. There have been plenty of scare stories about young people having big problems after smoking cannabis but it's usually because they decided to sit down and smoke an entire 8th in one spliff - I'd probably have big problems if i smoked that much in one go. Cannabis smokers are a lot more relaxed and cause very little hassle compared to say drunks rolling out of a pub. it never will be made legal though because 'middle England says no' and think heroin and cannabis are the same thing.

Although I don't smoke it I agree with you. All this war on drugs has succeeded in doing is overcrowding every prison in America and ruining the lives of otherwise honest kids who made an innocent mistake.
I think instead it should be taxed and sold like beer and cigarettes are now.

i dont take any illegal drugs, but having studied it in quite alot of detail I'm convinced all drugs, including heroin should be made legal
The fact is you can never stop people taking it, however much money your pour into enforcement
So you might as well have it out in the open so people don't have to steal / prostitute themselves to get it and you're not lining the pockets of gangsters with billions of pounds
If people want to stop, they will be able to seek help in an open and non-judgemental environment without fear of recrimination, and are hence more likely to get treatment
99% of people take drugs in the same way people have alcohol - for recreation - its not a problem and they're not hurting themselves or anyone else, at least no more than smokers and drinkers are. alcohol and tobacco do far more harm but there's also alot more help for people with problems because its not a hidden problem.
i could go on. but I have a report to write on it, so I wont carry on here

Yeah, of course they should. By the way, a 'junkie' is a person addicted to hard drugs. Cannabis is a soft drug. It should be made legal, taxed, and controlled in its content. Remove the criminal middleman and free people to make their own choices. Also, regulators could restrict the THC content to prevent the 'psychoses' they love to tout in the papers.

yes I do there are so many good reasons to make it legal. There are medical reasons also it is good for clothes, paper, rope etc.. I believe all natural drugs should be legal. God made plants for a reason. That is funny I just got through asking this very same question a few minutes ago

I think that the govt should make all drugs legal, then they could tax it. this would also allow the junkies to drug themselves to death and the world would be a better place without them.

I think it should be regulated much the same way alcohol is regulated. That is to say, only people of a certain age should be allowed to use it and they shouldn't be allowed to drive or operate heavy machinery while under the influence.
