Yeah it means laugh out loud. You might even see from time to time "lmao" which means Laughing my *ss off. Or "lmfao" which means Laughing my fat *ss off, and then there is "rotfl" which is rolling on the floor laughing. This is not a stupid question at all, and your right some people do answer it in the funniest of place. So I could see where it would be a bit confusing.
