"Candide" has the repeated refrain, "This is the best of all possible worlds," when the actions of the book make it quite clear that this is hardly so. It is sub-titled "Optimism": Voltaire was taking on one of the prevailing beliefs of his time, that the world, far from being evil, as aspects of religion held, was in fact reasonable, as we can discover by using our reason. Voltaire himself had been a part of this rationalist movement but now he expresses his disillusion with it. Alexander Pope, one of the major poets of the Enlightenment, wrote in "The Essay on Man," "Whatever is is right." This is what Candide's deluded tutor, Pangloss (he who puts a shine on everything), teaches. In "Candide" Voltaire demonstrates repeatedly that whatever is is almost always wrong. Candide starts out as a very naive young man and is put through a series of harrowing experiences. The immediate occasion for the book was the Lisbon earthquake which, with its massive loss of life, shattered the idea that the earth is a benign place. Voltaire thought religion a destructive and superstitious force, as you can see from the behavior of priests. In this sense Voltaire remained a son of the Enlightenment. So if a good deal is gone, including the physical beauty of Cunegonde, what is left for Candide and for us? It is the final advice of the book, given by a man who does not trust the world and has therefore retired from it. "Cultivate your garden." In other words, do your work, small as it may be. Avoid big issues, for that way lies despair; avoid getting entangled in the affairs of the world, which are marked by irrationality, lust, and avarice. Above all, the book seems to be saying that if you have a sense of humor--and Voltaire was a supremely witty man-- you will enjoy the world as an absurd joke. Think of all the former kings who are going to meet at the Carnival in Venice.
