Do you think it is a good idea to publish it online?

Nope. I know a guy who's a published author (Geoff Ryman his name is, he's a sci-fi writer) and he said not to attempt any sort of publishing without an agent. All the writers in the UK and New York are listed in a book called The Writers and Artists Yearbook and tips on how to approach these people are included in the book. Apparently that is the best way to go. Expect to get rejected a lot though. Stephen King got literally hundreds of rejections before he was published and so did J K Rowling, but I think it's safe to say that they came out on top!!

Depends on how confident you are that you've written a good book and whether you want to be a "real" writer or not.

If not, then go the self-publishing route. Honestly, except in a tiny percentage of cases (about 1 in 10,000) self-publishing whether online or offline the number of copies sold is about 5 ... and that's friends and family. No one else will buy it unless you put a huge amount of effort into promotion.

Also I'd suggest you use a "nom de plume" because a lot of real publishers won't touch anyone who has self-published.

But, if you want to be a "proper" author, just writing a book isn't enough. How many drafts have you done? How many times have you been through it polishing it until it's perfect?

How many opinions have you got -- that aren't family and friends, because family and friends *never* tell you the truth?

Have you had it read by a professional editor (like me -- but I'm not offering, I do it for money and I'm not cheap)?

Once you've got it into a state that is the best you think you can achieve you have to get an agent. If it's SF or fantasy you don't need an agent, but there are more agents than publishers so it's more sensible anyway.

You get the Writers & Artists Yearbook and/or The Writers Handbook (in the UK, there are US equivalents). The Handbook has more contacts, but the Yearbook has lots of really useful articles about how to be professional.

Trust me, if you don't act like a professional you *will* get rejected every time.

Anyway, I'm getting off the subject so I'll stop.

Good luck.

I suppose it would help you get some recognition, though you would probably get more recognition and a bit more of a likely chance of getting anywhere if you take it to a real publishers. If you do publish online make sure it is a website that copyrights the published books automatically otherwise someone could steal your idea and you would get no credit.

You could find a publishing company by searching online, but if I were you, once you've found the company you want to go with, I'd mail my manuscript in to them. And you might want to find a publisher that will help you promote and sell your book.
You might want to try this one: Tate Publishing
This is thier website: http://www.tatepublishing.com

POD is usually not OK. YOU have to promote the book. YOU have to sell it. Bookstores don't put Print On Demand books on their shelves.
