I recently bought a townhouse will all electric power. I noticed the red emergency heat light on whenever the heat kicked on. We have a one year warranty on the house and a man came out and said that we needed a new outside unit. To make a long story short, a new outside unit was installed, but when ever the heat comes on the red emergency light still comes on. I called and he had me take the cover off the thermostat. told me to get the top mercury ball to the left and keep the bottom one to the right, and he asked if anything happened. I could hear the fan kick on, but the heat did not come on. He then said to take both mercury balls to the left and the heat should come on. I did and the emergency heat came on. He said that it is normal to come on for a little while in the mornings as long as it is not coming on during the day. It has been rather mild here lately like in the 60's. Shouldn't the aux. heat be enough to heat the house. Am I getting the run around or what is the deal here

The light that you see is an indication that the electric back-up (emergency heat in the air handler) is running. The emergency heat will run (typically) if you move the thermostat above room ambient by more than 2-3 degrees at any one given time. The T-stat is a 2 stage.......first stage is heat pump (outdoor unit only) and 2nd stage is the electric kw back-up.....typically 5-15kw.

In the room where the t-stat is located, check the room temp via the t-stat and increase it by 1-2 degrees only. Is the outdoor unit running? Is the light still on? If you are within 2-3 degrees above the t-stat temp and the light is on, watch it and see if does go out prior to the t-stat satisfying your current setting.

If it does not, you have something wrong with the control wiring. Possibly w1 and w2 (controls first and 2nd stage heat) are making contact.

You will definitely need to get the Company out there that installed and have them prove to you that the emergency back-up is not running when you are within the 2-3 degrees mentioned above.

Good Luck!

The emergency heat light will come on when the outdoor unit fails, this is not a normal condition, you have a problem with the outdoor unit, when the emergency light is on, it is generally heating off the kilowatt heater built in to the airhandler, second stage heat is sometimes wired to the emergeny heat circuit.

It sounds like you have a heat pump. They don't work as well as a regular electric heater so the emergency heat is required at first to bring the temps. in the house up quickly. After that the heat pump should keep it comfortable with the weather you have now.
