To connect them directly to one another use a crossover cable. It's just like a regular network cable except it's flipped at one connector.

Or you could just create a small network, go buy a switch and some network cables then connect both machines and your internet to the switch.

In order to connect two computer directly with only a cable, you need what's known as a "CAT 5 crossover cable" -- you can't connect computers directly through a standard cable. The most common solution is to connect both systems to a switch or hub with standard cables.

You can probably just connect the two with
an ethernet cable since most LAN cards
negotiate and swap transmit and receive as needed.

However, you'll need to configure your operating
system to recognize the LAN and do the right thing.
Windows will have a very different method of
configuring this than any variant of Linux,
OpenSolaris, etc.

And of course, you might be running a different
OS on one machine than on the other.

What are the machines running?

ditto on the crossover cable. you can find them at any compter store, office depot has them. best buy does not, for some reason. I keep one in my laptop bag in case i run into another user at work that i want to share or swap files with. just plug it in both machines, you have an easy, simple network. works best if both are running xp or better, older operating systems don't configure automatically.
you don't need a hub if you use a crossover. but you are limited to two computers connecting.

Get a HUB or Router. Youll plug your Cable Modem to the HUB then run ethernet cables to each computer. Very simple no setup required.

Then find out the IP of each computer. Share your resources and go for it.

First thing is to buy a "crossover cable" and then use the networking settings to establish the connection.

You did not mention what OS you're using so I can't be more specific than that. But it is not a hard thing to do if you have the cable. They're not expensive.
