Many years ago, during my active playing days, there were a fair number of players that wore a tennis glove to help with the grip. These days, however, I see almost no one wearing them. Have they just gone out of fashion, or has some research definitively shown they are not much of a help and in fact can harm your game? I used them off and on for awhile, but ended up hardly using them as well.

I think that you lose some feeling for the ball when using a glove. I know they protect your hands from getting blisters , but after a short time the blister turns into a callous and you do not have to worry about it anymore. Gloves have gone the way of the long pants the old timers used to use.
