You can't get something from nothing, so you cannot increase power without trading it for something else.
Your car's mileage is determined by how much gas it uses per mile, and is set up to use a specific amount of air and fuel with each combustion stroke to achieve that.
To get more power you need a bigger explosion, and you can't get that unless you increase the amount of what you're burning. Kind of like how an M-80 has a larger explosion than a firecracker.
The easiest way to get more power is to give your engine more air with a high-flow filter, better airbox, modified intake, etc., and to get rid of the exhaust gases better with new headers, a free-flow catalytic converter, and a new exhaust system. The car's computer will see the change in the air/fuel ratio and inject more fuel to compensate, giving you more power.
The obvious thing (and what the aftermarket people don't EVER mention) is that using more fuel results in lower gas mileage.

That will depend on how you are increasing the power. On mine I changed the stock air system to a Kuryakyn which increased the air flow and power along with it. The best part of this is it also increase the gas mileage over 35%.

With any internal combustion engine, when you open the throttle to increase power, more air and fuel are pulled in to the combustion chamber. The more fuel that is pulled in to go faster, it decreases the available fuel to go farther.

Its like going to a shop with a dollar ,you buy something ,and you get your change ,so it is with a motor , you go in with a gallon ,you take your hp out, and you get your change, simple!
the more power you take out ,the less gas you have left, until oops! it stops ,out of money, out of gas, out of hp.

bigger upgrade parts mean more energy to work the motor, which in turn means more fuel consumption, just like when you run you are using more force to make yourself run, which takes more oxygen, same concept.
