Wherever I live I check the smoke alarm on the 1st of every month. If I make it a habit I'll remember to do it. Also I change the batteries every year starting from when I first move into a place to live. If I move to somewhere where the smoke alarm looks really old I get a new one.
A former partner is a fire fighter so I'm over-cautious about this.

Hi

yes good idea, but that should be a periodicd check, every month, or so, i mean , i have wired my alarms up, my smoke alarms are also battery backed aswell.

its better to have battery backed, the council approves them, if you do a loft conversion or anything.

good luck

Nope Mine are also plugged into the mains, council automatically as soon as it does any upgrade work in its houses must now fit them. When the emergency battery inside fails, you know about it!

As ours are linked to the mains, as soon as the batteries go, or there is a power-cut, they make a HUGE racket, so have no choice but to ensure that they have batteries in as backup, or we are deafened.
