I have just seen " an evening with Jimmy Greaves" advertised, good luck to him but the last time he played football we had a King on the throne- well nearly.

I say good luck to him too, it must be hard to have been famous for something only to drift into the background, and see newer 'celebs' coming forward that don't do anything more than sleep with someone famous to get a name!

Imagine yourself in their position, I think I'd milk it for all I could too!!

It's very difficult to retreat from fame. Your friends don't wish to give up the reflected glory, and so they'll keep after you even when you've decided, albeit very reluctantly, to give it up already and go back to being you. You can also make some money with appearances if someone is willing to pay you and you're willing to risk embarrassment. Most celebrities are willing to take the risk.

I think it might be easier for athletes, because nobody expects a retired football player to keep playing, and the status of a retired athlete is thus fairly well-defined in the public mind. It would be lots harder for performers whose looks and skills gradually deteriorate with age. But we try, anyway.

I'd rather listen to some of Jimmy Greaves' more colourful tales from his era than some of the mundane crap that today's players spout.

bruce forsyth, des o'connor, val doonican, joan collins,
shirley bassey, pet clark, tony bennett, joe longthorn, et al, all appearing at a venue near you, so to speak, but the bands of the 60's 70's 80's all have new personnel. says something about the old timers lifestyles, as opposed to the younger element.

Some do... But some fade away into the background and are forgotten about til their death... Until it is announced and then people start saying things like: 'Oh remember him, he was good at this n that he was'
...Hypocrites.. They're not interested in them at the time...

Sorry... Moan for the day is over!! :-)

xx
