I find this happens to me when I have automatic update from Microsoft turned on. When it automatically updates my Windows OS in the middle of the night, it will often reboot to install the updates.

The later model computers do not really turn off when you shut them down. The system board is active all the time and something as simple as a lightning flash or even turning on a light can restart them.
If your name is usually on the login screen and it was still there, probably you do not have a 'zombie' malware in your 'puter.
Get a good anti-virus program, get the latest update and scan. then get AdAware update it and scan.

Those two proggys should take care of most of virus and malware problems.

Well im sure plenty of people here saw someone sneak in last night and turn your computer on....

Sorry, there isnt much we can help you with regarding the information you gave.

You probably just left your computer on and forgot. It happens...

Sometimes when we go to shut down our computer, we accidently CLICK the LOG OFF instead of SHUTDOWN or RESTART...

If you accidently clicked LOG OFF< then your computer LOGGED OFF and went to the LOGIN SCREEN and just waited for you to log back in.

My computer has done this in the past. Mine was because it was overheating and needed the dust blown out of the inside of the tower. It eventually gets worse and worse, rebooting more often the dustier it gets. Try taking the tower cover off and buying one of those pressurized air cans and blow out the inside, making sure to blow off all the circuit boards. Good luck!

windows will do this to protect itself when it encounters a fatal error the fault can be caused by drivers (one of the most common reasons) to faulty hardware check out the insides of the computer if it's full of dust it may be causing overheating, if it only happens occasionally don't worry about it, it may just be a one off

If it purely turns off without the homestead windows is shutting down...., then its hardware appropriate. If it does say homestead windows is shutting down... then its no longer hardware appropriate and that's an epidemic.

open the side panel of the computer and see if the fan is dusty! if so blow it out with a can of compressed air, blow the whole inside out! check to see if the fan is working right!

Are you sure you shut it down? Or it's in the re-start mode when you try to shut down and leave?
