Technically, that would be number 1 vs. number 65 and it probably wouldnt be a contest.

Not the NIT or Not in the Tournament tournament is for the teams not good enough to make the top 65. Even with automatic bids in the NCAA for smaller conferences you still won't be missing any of the top 30 teams. So there is no chance the NIT winner is better than the NCAA winner.

The NCAA controls the team selection to both tournaments. All 34 conference champions get the automatic bid to the NCAA field of 65. The remaining 31 slots are reserved for the best teams that didn't win their conference tournament.

The NIT, or as I like to call it, the "Not Invited Tournament", is reserved for regular-season champs from small conferences that lost in their conference tournament, and a handful of brand-name universities that had mediocre years. In some ways, after the first 65 in the NCAA, the NIT is the next 32.

Regardless, in a head-to-head game of champions, the NIT champion will likely be embarassed by the vastly superior NCAA champion, almost to the level of a Globetrotters v. Generals match-up.

Sure they could do it, but it wouldn't even be a game. The NCAA tournament title team could demolish the NIT tournament team by about 30 points.

And anyways the NCAA tournament team is already the true number one because the NIT team wasnt even good enough to make the NCAA tournament.

Won't happen. The NCAA Tourney selection board will re-butt it. Imagine this, what kind of stir would it create if the NIT champ beats the NCAA champ. The selection board would be scrutinized more than they already are for not selecting teams like Syracuse who beat Georgetown, to get in. Major embarrassment. Anybody can beat anybody on anyday so a #1 can be beat by a # 66, not #65 due to one win and your in game (like Niagra vs. FAMU).

It wouldn't make a true number 1. The NIT is for teams that couldn't make the NCAA. Since 65 teams make the tourny (including the play in game) they would be the number 66 team in the nation. I love it to see fans go crazy after their team just won the NIT..."we're the 66th best team!" It's funny!
