Lets be honest, South Africa is an amazing friendly country with a richness and diversity of cultures that one is hard pressed to find in other countries.
And this is why some South Africans:
1) Are so upset with a small percentage of criminals who are holding the country ransom.
2) Are so upset with a government that does so few for all it´s people, black, white, brown, pink etc. and so blatantly takes advantage of the power which so desperatley needs to be used to do good.
3) Find it so difficult to leave.
Sometimes one needs to take a step outside and look at what is going on in other countries to appreciate your own.
And sometimes it may be better to stay at home. The saying "Ignorance is bliss" can apply to South Africa.
There is a song by "James" I think, and some of the words are "if I didn´t see such riches I could do with being poor".
In my case the riches I saw were in another country - freedom of mobility, safety, healthy social environment, and energy and time that I used worrying about crime can be directed to plans of the future..
Everybody has their own needs and version of happiness. And if you can find that in South Africa with friends and family and not dwell on the future too much, then enjoy.
On the other hand if you can´t then it might not be a bad idea to start considering your options.
Most people in Europe know little about South Africa, it´s government or the crime.
They will never fully appreciate a day in the life of a South African until they experience it themselves.
After a while you realise that it´s not that they don´t care but it just does not effect them directly.
(How much do we know or care about Laos for example?)
hope this helps

A great country with diverse but great people. Not unlike anywhere else, its people are very impatient - that's why (while one does not condone slow service delivery) we complain about every little thing. Generally, the spirits of the people are high. My main worry is the crime level, if those entrusted with keeping the country safe can do more!
I've lived in countries around the world - many of them very nice to live in, but will never trade-in South Africa for any.

South Africa is headed towards the same status as all other African Countries and will be best remembered what it was like when run properly. You have a Communist regime whose only priority is kleptomania and they will run the Country into the ground. They say a Country gets the Government it deserves which is why so many South Africans have fled there and continue to do so.

i feel its a big jungle, where you find all the wild animals. its also popular for the beauty pageants. i recall the country got independent in 1994, and hosted the Miss World contest, and then the Miss India, Aiswarya Rai had won the contest.

Not good I'm afraid. The indications are that it is heading in some very questionable directions, but hopefully not to the depths that poor Rhodesia has descended into.

I gravitate between feeble hope to utter despondency. The longer I stay here the worse it seems to be getting.
