I use several sources TV news as a base then I research with several sources. I like to cross reference with the Radio Free Press and the BBC networks on-line.

Democrat. I vote in every election.
NPR, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (my local paper),internet sites - mostly Yahoo, New York Times (usually on the internet), subscribe to Newsweek and Business Week, local TV newscasts (but not frequently), Meet the Press (I've been using the podcasts lately.)
And a lot by talking to people.
I never watch nightly network TV news (I'm just getting home from work and spending time with my family and dinner at that hour) nor do I subscribe to any of the cable news stations like Fox, CNN, MSNBC.
I arrive at opinions by gathering information, thinking and deciding what I believe and what makes sense according to my experience.

Republican. I vote every election, even local.
I read the Kansas City Star, Washington Post, New York Times, CNN website, FOX website, along with a ton of other legit news websites. I do not watch television and prefer to read my news.
I also listen to news channels on the radio. Too many to list.
Edit: I last voted a couple of weeks ago. I think to some degree everyone's life experience shapes their views in such a way that it would be impossible to fully analyze. I have a Master's in Political Science. That greatly shaped my views. The left bias media also pushes me a little more right because I can see through the BS and it irritates me.

I read mostly Internet news. Many sites, to gain an all-around perspective. I am a registered republican and last voted in Nov. 2006 in local PA elections. Ronald Reagan shaped my political views. I am a Reagan conservative, and NOT a neocon.

A liberal in the true sense of the word, read Washington Post, New York Times, the Economist, and the Wall Street Journal. Don't own a television. Vote every election.

I DO NOT watch television news. It is sensationalistic and annoying. They are out for ratings, and nothing more. I also find television news quite insulting to my intelligence.
I usually check out the news on Yahoo headlines. If I'm actively seeking more news, I go to Google News and my local news paper. And if I'm wanting more, I go to the Christian Science Monitor (not as Christian as the name implies). I feel that from these sources, I get a wide variety of news reporting styles and biases.
From there, if I want to be further educated on a topic, I usually read about the history of it and about who is involved. I get that information from a variety of sources online ranging from the BBC to Wikipedia (yes, I recognize Wikipedia has issues).
The idea is that I'm exposed to as wide of a variety as possible.
EDIT: Sorry, I missed the second part of your question. I'm independent (used to be a Democrat until I got sick of the BS on both sides). I voted in the last gubernatorial election which was last November. What shapes my political beliefs are my values which I gained from my parents and from my education.

Read news from all over. Opinions are shaped by personal experiences, upbringing and education. Independent with libertarian leanings, voted in 2006.
