Without a Baby Shower you can get by with spending about 3000$

I am 10 days from my due date with our first baby. We were very fortunate in that my sister is lending us a crib, i have received hand-me-down clothes from my sister, cousin, and a friend. I have also been lucky enough to borrow a breast pump, baby tub, jumper, 2 pack-n-plays, changing table pad, and a snugli carrier. My mom threw me a shower where i received my infant car seat, a second base, more clothes, a glider, an exersaucer, a stroller (big one and umbrella), books, toys, bottles, rattles, etc. We have been very fortunate in that we have not had to buy very much yet. I did buy the baby's coming home outfit, but the biggest purchase my husband and I made was to buy paint and window treatments for the nursery. We received almost everything else!

As far as other furniture in the nursery, we are using an old dresser that we had with a changing table pad instead of buying a changing table. I also took some older shelves we had in the living room and placed that in the nursery to hold toys, etc. I decided not to buy any furniture for the nursery b/c i felt that i would rather spend the money on a nice bedroom set when the baby gets a little older, and is out of the baby/toddler bed.

I haven't yet looked into daycare, but the doctor visits are all covered (except i have a 700$$ deductible for the hospital stay/delivery).

Diapers, wipes, etc.....those disposable necessary items will add up, and as our daughter gets older, she will cost us more money.

Hope this helps a little!

It's hard to say how much one would spend because there are so many variables. Do you have insurance that would pay most of the doctor and hospital bill? You could buy used furniture (except for the car seat) as these things usually last through several babies. Same goes for clothes as babies grow pretty fast. As for diapers you can figure that you'll use several every day - just think about how many times you go to the bathroom per day. The yearly cost increases as the child gets older and needs more clothes, shoes, food, shots, and more. Babies don't come cheap!

Not much I had a baby shower and I got a lot. But they are expensive. I bottle feed so its like a can of formula every two days. They out grow there car seats, clothes, nipple flow, socks. Then its up to real baby food. .70 a jar. its expensive. I would say an extra $200 a month including diapers and wipes, on avarage!

Honey if you are trying to talk yourself out of having a baby then sit around and think of the expenses for having a baby. If you are already preggo then I suggest you start buying dipers every twenty dollars you have extra after bills instead of going out to eat. For the baby shower only ask for serious things don't get too hung up on clothes they grow sooooo fast. If you are able to breast feed then that is whats best for both mother and child and cheapest! Hopefully you have good insurence or the father does that way your co-pay wont be too much. As for day care why pay someone else to take care of your baby and witness all the precious things that only happen once in your childs life. I quit my job because I was basically going to work for my little girl to go to day care...made no sence to me! If you are pregnant please be responsible and think about your decisions before hand. Good luck to you and I will pray for you!

I wasn't going to answer your question, because I wasn't sure of a number, but remember that many people have baby showers before the birth of a child, so a lot of the things you mentioned may be given as gifts which will drop your cost a little bit. Preparing for a baby is probably the easy part. It's the upkeep that's hard. (Upkeep? Okay, maybe not the best term, but you know what I mean.)

I highly suggest you become a member of your local freecycle. Go to www.freecycle.org to look up the group nearest you. Babies outgorwn things SOOO quickly there is no need to purchase most of the stuff new. As for formula, check with your local DHS to see if your state has the WIC program. Every bit of my son's formula was free for a year. Also remember yard sales for clothes and supplies!! Your household bills should not go up any.

It depends on what resources you have. For instance, my family has just about went nuts and bought me everything I need including diapers for about 6 months. My insurance covers everything, my mom WANTS to be my daycare. So honestly if I were to breastfeed my baby would not cost a dime for a long time. But if you have to do everything yourself you are looking at thousands of dollars.

That's a loaded question. Seriously. This is what some people would say..."if you have to ask...you can't afford".

A baby cost a lot of money. Day to day, month to month, year to year. It's never ending. Consider it wisely. Babies grow into Toddlers, Toddlers into Children, Children into Teens, Teens into Adults. It's never ending.
