Don't they notice that they are the only ones there? And don't they care the the restaurant staff might be tired and want to go home? Anyone else hate this? Anyone do this and think it's okay?

I have no clue, but it's soooo annoying. I know when I'm on the road or something and need a quick bite, I ASK them if they're still serving. If the grill's down, OK, I'll at least ask for a cold sandwich or something quick for the road. But I understand if they're cleaning.

Now, at my restaurant I ran into those same boorish people you're talking about. One family of SIX would always show up 15 minutes before close. They were always rude, never tipped more than ONE dollar. So we'd clean up around them, after all we were closed! We'd even park the vacuum cleaner in the middle of the dining room as a "hint".

For some other late diners, I could forgive them if they apologized for eating late or they'd been in the fields. If they were nice, I could let that go.

They are just plain rude and inconsiderate. Or they have never had to work in a restaurant before and have no idea what it's like. I remember once this soccer team with about 30 people came in 30 minutes before we closed. Of course it took about 15 more minutes for all of them to order and for us to get all their food out to them. They did leave right about 9:00 (which was when we closed) but they didn't seem to think about how we couldn't just leave as soon as they did. Since we had to do so much for them, we got behind on all our closing tasks. AND, they left a huge mess and the place looked like a tornado had gone through. So, not only were we behind but we had clean up after them because they were such pigs. Because of them, we stayed two and a half hours later than we normally did.

How about walking in at 5 minutes before closing and then deciding that you need about 30 minutes before you can even decide what it is that you want to drink? Or changing you mind after you order has been delivered to the kitchen that you need to tweak the order just a little making it necessary for the cook or chef to start all over again? People don't think twice about what they are requiring of a restaurant because they know that in most restaurants the customer is always right even when they rude, crude and obnoxious. Restaurants rely on happy guests and know that word of mouth can either make or break a restaurant's reputation.

It isn't just restaurants though, people have forgotten how to be courteous to each other and then wonder why others are not always happy to see them.

Some people are incredibly selfish and thoughtless. I suspect they don't tip very well either. The answer, of course is because the restaurant allows it. The kitchen should close for hot meals a half-hour before the posted hours. This gives the kitchen staff a chance to get started on clean up. It also discourages last minute diners since the menu options would be very limited.

Because they're jerks. I never go in a restaurant less than a half hour before closing, and even on those rare occasions, I would order something quick and simple so I'd be sure to be out of there before the posted closing time. And I'm not bragging; it's just common courtesy. Unfortunately, some people seem to lack all forms of common sense!

I'm a waitress and work at a place where "the customer is always right" even at one in the morning. The only thing I can think of is that they're selfish and really don't care for others. It really sucks for the staff cause we have to stay there until they decide to leave, and then we get to clean up after that. People just don't think about others sometimes.

I wish I could tell you that answer, but I can't figure it out my self. Personally I work in a sub shop, we close at 9 and have had people come in at 8:55 and order the biggest sub they can. I absolutely hate it, but unfortunatly there doesn't appear to be anything that we can do about it. And those people that come in late are the same people who are extremely rude. I think the reason they do it is just to do it because they can, their thinking "hmm as long as I don't have to clean it up or do any work." It seems to me they just dont care.

But yes I hate it too.

No, it is not ok. It's a case of people not caring about anyone else but themselves.
