Gauges going crazy, car having problem starting and overheating

If the guages are going crazy when you try to start it and it does not crank that well its most likely a battery that causing it. Overheating is a different story

As with most cars, disconnect the negative lead from the battery, and wait 5-10 min. then re-connect. This MAY clear your indicator light. But, this reset will not clear the code history in the computer (your car stores every "trouble code" it has ever used), that needs to be done by a professional. HOWEVER, this will NOT affect your car's running problems, and will not do anything about the temp. gauge rising and falling. To be totally honest with you, it sounds as if you may have overheated the car, and caused some internal engine damage. Usually on most modern engine systems (like the one in your PT) the ECM (computer) will cut the motor out if operating temperatures have been exceeded, and the car will not run any better until you have the problem fixed. I have seen plenums go bad from overheating, resulting in the same problems that you are having. The thing that most people don't know is that many of the cars out there (including your PT) are running a lot more plastic parts on the motor, so overheating isn't just a bad thing now, it could be near fatal to your car. If I were in your place, I would take the car over to a certified (ASE) mechanic and have it looked at and fixed, otherwise, you could do some permanant damage to your car that can't be fixed.

Resetting the computer is not going to fix your overheating problem. It will only turn your check engine light off temporarily. As for the gauges could be a wireing problem.
As far as actually resetting the ECM most likely it will need to be done by a scanner at a shop. Older ECMs you could disconect the battery to clear them, but the newer cars you can't.

disconnect the neg lead from the battery for 5 Mins.
