I low-end dell will work just fine. I have a dell laptop and have had it for 6 years now and I love it. I have not had any issues with the battery. The 1501 model starts at $599 and will satisfy your requirements easily.

Here are the latest deals and coupons for dell: http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good luck.

the cheapest you can find with the screen size that suits you. I would recommend for watching movies 15.4" wide, although you could also watch on smaller - or larger (17" wide) screens. You may find good deals after rebates - a Celeron- or Semprom- based 15.4" can cost you after rebate $300. Just for watching movies and editing text you don't need more than that.

editing texts and watching movies can be on any laptop, you don't need any special specification laptop do to that, even a cheap, low-end, low budget would do. But if editing movies, playing games, graphics, etc.....is another story. You have to have fast computer, lots of memory to do it, otherwise, the computer will be very slow.
