Traditionally they write from the top and downwards in columns and from right to left. Many of their books and comics are read from the right page to the left page, thus why the books seem backwards.
Now, they also write left to right horizontally like in Western culture. So it just depends on the format of the book. Wikipedia has an excellent and indepth way to learn about it, if you want to know more.
