I have to repair a wall where a door knob knocked a hole in it. I know I need sheet rock and that mesh stuff to do it, but I was wondering if I have to buy a whole big piece of sheet rock or if they sell smaller sizes.

Small repair patches are sold with a metal backing and a mesh cover. They are simple to cover with some compound. This is a relatively simple job and most people can tackle it themselves. If this won't work you can always purchase small salvaged pieces at your local "big box" home improvement store. I would recommend the repair patches if the hole is small enough-it is much easier and neater.

They also sell a kit that you install to basically leave the hole. The kit is plastic and has a recessed area where the door know will fit to enable you to fully open the door and not ever have to worry about having to patch it again. Also there is no taping, mudding or paint matching involved just peal the double sided tape and press into place. This is a lot quicker and a permanent repair.

Most often HD or Lowes has a bin, or bins where they put "Culled" material. It may be end cuts of any manner of lumber, etc. they deem still viable, and they price it. I can't make it a promise but I have to believe there are days when part sheets of damaged drywall are CULLED.

Another source you might try are job sites, where excess is often put in a dumpster, and ask the contractor in charge.

"Habitat for Humanity" operates "thrift stores" out of which they sell donated or left over materials from their various job sites and contributors.

Go to a Home Depot-type store and you'll find scrap pieces in the area where drywall is stored. Just grab a small piece, They won't care esp if you are buying something else.

Lowes, or ace hardware, might have cuts, if not go to where the constuction or building is going on and bum a piece from the Mexicans hanging wallboard, they are friendly and generous.
