Maybe you shouldn't. Many laptops now come without OS and drivers disks. They actually have a partition with an image of the OS and the drivers. Like the Thinkpad I'm currently using. Can you see this partition in 'My Computer'? Usually the kind of partition I'm talking about is hidden.

A free partitioning program called GParted can be downloaded, burned to CD, boot from it and you can format anything with many different file formats. But remember when you format, everything on that disk is gone.

Boot into Safe mode by tapping the "F8" key repeatedly from a cold start. Then, right-click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management.

R-Click on Drive D and choose Format.

TIP: Back up all personal data from "D:" first.

Try using the program suggested by the other user.

Or you can try to boot in safe mode or DOS mode(?) then you can format there.
