The gear shift lever (automatic transmission) moves freely, but does not shift gears. It is in 'drive' and will not change to another gear. Does it need a new transmission?

I'd check cables or linkage first. It could be the shifting lever on the side of the tranny is out of position from wear or lose bolts.

You may just need to fix the shifter. Or have it realigned. Take it to a Tranny shop and ask about your shifter, do not tell them you have a tranny problem or they will juke you out of a new tranny and that is not good!!
