I have the same car and yes break pads do ware out very quickly.
I do a lot of miles, about 30000 each year and I have to replace the front pads at least twice a year.
Also the front tyres ware out very quickly and again I get through two sets a year.

Apart from these two items the rest of the car is brilliant and a really pleasure to drive.

P.S anyone with a little know how can replace the front pads, Kia wanted over £120 to do them last time I checked but I brought the pads from Kia for £45 and it took me under an hour to replace them.

Good luck.

hi there, it all depends on how you drive the vehicle, obviously if you drive the vehicle hard and sharp on the brakes they wont last as long as if you was more gentle with them as alot of people use the gears to slow them down as so do i do,
on average the pads should last you at least 10,000 mile, if you are really carful they could last 20,000 miles, i have a friend who owns a Volbo S40 1.8 16v, hes own the car 3 years now and done about 26,000 miles in it, im going to be doing the brakes next month has theres still about 3mm left on them, hope this helps Gary

The life of brake pads in any vehicle is based on milage and the drivers foot pressure and driving style not time. If they are shot then just get new ones and if your mileage is not representative of the expected life of the brake shoe then evaluate your driving style. (are you a 2 footed driver...driving with one foot on the brake and one on the gas....do you step excessively hard on your brake when you use it ? )
