Insert small wood dowels into the existing screw holes first if any still exsist. The best thing to fill the gap is Plastic body filler. After this dries, you can take a drill and rebore the affected area. Works like a charm.

Yes, but before you do is the hole so big that you could bunch up some newspaper to adhere the filler to? I had the same problem but it wasn't where the screws went. After I filled it with newspaper and wood filler I put a piece of masking tape over it and painted the whole door. Ok so it didn't look perfect but it was solid and better than looking at the hole. Wood filler dries hard enough that you can sand and drill and do anything that you would normally be able to do with real wood, like putting those two screws back in. Just allow it to dry good before drilling it.

(This service needs an ability to post a picture!)

- Big hardware stores should have a nice selection of brass surrounds (security or decorative) that might look nice and cover the problem area. Under this you could either leave it as-is, or fill with wood putty or even automotive body repair materials like Bondo.
- If the door is to be painted, I'd use Bondo for the strength rather than wood putty.
- Cut out the damaged area and splice in a section of hardwood. But this isn't an easy task for the unskilled.

Yes. There are epoxy cements that are made to match the expansion of the wood so they will not flake out. Fill the broken screw holes with that and let it harden (some do in 5 minutes and others take all day). Then drill small starter holes where you want the screws to go. Try getting longer screws so they go through the epoxy and also into unbroken wood.

Go to your local Home store...lowes , home depot etc. and get some wood putty...it takes awhile to dry but will work. The only other option is to add a piece of wood to both sides of the door to accomodate the brass fitting.

You can use auto body filler. Also you could drill the screw-holes bigger, insert the same size dowel rod (glue in with wood glue), and pre-drill a new screw hole in the dowel rod.

I agree with Kirks third suggestion. You don't say if this is an exterior door or not but for the longest lasting repair cut out the bad section and replace it with new wood.

lots of times you can use some toothpicks to fill the screw hole if they aren't to big , otherwise there is a product out on the market called water putty , it dries real hard ,than you have to sand it down .
