Run check disk from the command prompt, you may or may not be prompted to reboot.
To run Chkdsk at the command prompt
1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Use one of the following procedures: • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
• To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk drive are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk C:/r, and then press ENTER

perform a surface scan using check-disk.
(on XP it will only do this when your system reboots)
from RUN, type CMD (then enter)
at C:\>_ type: "chkdsk c: /f"
then press Y (yes) to perform at reboot.
reboot your computer and it will perform a full check-disk
(it will take quite some time) once rebooted, if the chkdsk program sorts all problems, defrag should work...

Are you having problems with your hard drive or with Windows? If it is the hard drive, you should be able to go to the manufacturer's website and get a drive fitness test for it. If it is Windows, research BartPE on Google. It walks you through setting up a CD to boot to. You can then run checkdisk from there. Good luck.

You may have spyware, run a spyware programme.
Counterspy is a good one and is free for 14 days, so use that. If not go into your pc settings and make sure you have enough memory to run it, as you need a certain amount of memory to run it.
