Others might see it necessary for someone to always be frank, but if someone is always frank about things that could be hurtful or disheartening then they could easily be labeled cruel and insensitive. I believe that more of the sensitive, caring side is not Always being frank as it can show that you are looking out for the outcome of another person or a situation.
Yes, it is necessary to be frank at times- but there are exceptions.

Then again- being frank or not being frank really depends on whose "selfishness" (for lack of a better word) that you would like to appease. To not be frank may be satisfying self. To be frank might just be satisfying someone else.
It has a downside either which way you look at it, as well as an up side.

Good grief, no! Why? Because so many things aren't any of our business, and we forget that too often.

That doesn't mean that I think people should go around lying, but most people who say they value "always being frank" can't tell the difference between opinion and objective fact, and go through the world hurting people unneccesarily.

Very rarely do these champions of total honesty (BTW, "honest" doesn't always equal "true") want it in return. Before you tell someone his hair looks awful (your subjective opinion), be honestly prepared to welcome him informing you that your clothes look like you dress in the dark, in a circus tent. Wheeee! What fun relationships we'll all have on the day we all embrace total frankness.

I think we'd all get along better if we paused to reflect on that useful question, "Who asked you?," then paused to further reflect on what we were about to say. There are times to be brutally frank, ("You should check into rehab before they find you facedown in a gutter - I'll drive you there") but most of the time ("You know, your rear end looks like two bulldogs fighting in a rubber sack") we should keep our opinions to ourselves until ASKED, and then try to be both honest and kind.

Generally, it's the safest thing to do. There are, however, times when one can tell a little white one to spare someone's feelings. For example, you do not need to say to your grandmother "You know, Grams, I have eaten a lot better Sunday dinner than this one you always serve..." In other words, sometimes, you have to weigh the benefit of total frankness against the issues it may bring into your own or other peoples lives.

No - I think that people should tell little white lies once in a while to save hurting. If someone askes you whether they look awful with varicose veins in their legs - it is very impolite to say "yes - you do". A bit of discretion cannot do any harm at all.

Not really. Some people feel bad when hearing the truth that hurts, they prefer being lied. They get upset if you lie, get upset if you tell them the truth...who can understand what do they want?
