It`s short for good bye. Let time being we part, but will meet soon. And this parting is inevitable and only those good things may happen in between. This, we wish only to friends and not to enemies. No??

Bye means farewell. When we say bye to our friends we means to tell farewell.Nowadays we usebye instead of farewell. Of course nobody tells bye to their enemies.

Bye (or the shortened form, goodby, sometimes used in American English) is a traditional farewell phrase used in the English language. Most scholars agree that the phrase originally derives from "God be with you." . It has also been suggested by some that it originated from "God buy you".
