I don't think so, I think ads are more needed for them - it's a great boost when their down on their luck

Needed? No, but it helps.

Testimonials can be a very persuasive form of advertising. If you respect the celeb, you'll respect their endorsement of the product or service they advertise.

One of the best ad campaigns in history, in my opinion, is the "I'm going to Disney World!" campaign done from 1987 to the present. It capitalized on the winners of big competitions like the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, America's Cup, and the World Series. Disney would contract the MVP(s) of both teams to be ready to say "I'm going to Disneyland" or "I'm going to Disney World" if/when they won.
