Question for musicians.... Monitors?

Question

I am looking into getting some equipment to play small coffee houses, etc. I need just two small, good sounding speakers that have built-in amp. Is what I am describing, actually what monitors are? ....or what is the difference, and if not...what would be a good pair of speaker/amp combo to buy?

Monitors are your spearkers to hear sound from. Amps are the power to push the sound.
