I have often thought what would happen in Australia if they banned smoking. I don't know if US has the same taxes we do on cigarettes, but I believe it could seriously bankrupt a country if they do. I believe that is why every quit smoking ad in Australia shows a person lighting up - evrytime I see an ad, it makes me want to smoke. I don't think a company could possibly survive with the government losing all that money in one hit. They'd have to start taxing fruit and veg.

Cigarettes wouldn't be outlawed anywhere in the world, at least not in this life time. There are too many smokers who would protest against the government preaching about their freedom to do what they want in a country that supposedly promotes freedom above all else for its citizens.
Public venues I can agree with, they are starting to crack down on the number of places you can even smoke in Australia, at one place, even evicting a couple from their apartment because the naighbours complained that their constant smoke kept them awake every night.

They should be.
I smoked once and quit 3 years ago. It was hard to quit, but certainly the best thing I could have done for my body. If it is outlawed it will save a lot of lives and return a lot of quality to people's lives. It's about time the government stepped in.

With the amount of money the government makes on cig taxes, they will increase the taxes 60% before they outlaw them. What a stupid thought to consider.
Also, the doctors and hospitals will forever be in business as long as the tobacco companies continue to supply their products, so why we would outlaw it? It's good for society!?
You really should stop smoking - hope you didn't have kids and hurt their health growing up. Try this program - it's not really a program - it's more of a reality check - and you can stop smoking NOW forever - http://www.rational.org/html_bullets/Bullet1.html

I hadn't heard of that, but would certainly be ecstatic if it were to come true. There's nothing I hate more than having to smell someone's nasty cigarette smoke, and if making it illegal is the only way to get you smokers to quit then hopefully this law takes effect tomorrow

I hope they are, but I don't think they will. Too much money involved not only in the sale of them but for the doctors that get to treat lung cancer and emphesemia. By the way, when you get the latter, that will be the hard time.

The smoke police should concentrate on emissions from cars fires etc. They should also think about alcohol which does more harm than cigarettes. What about all the illegal drugs, why don't they spend more time enforcing that?

The government makes too much money off of them to do that. Most of what you pay is taxes.

Yes, it would be hard....but its a disgusting habit and it turns your insides to black mud. Sorry smokers.....I'd vote for an abolishment of cigarettes.
Smoking and alcohol has done nothing but ruin the lives of many of my family members.....therefore I'm against it.
