Well, anything can bent in this universe. None of these objects actually going to have its own shape, rather due to the external and internal forces they will take the shape. For example why earth is spherical. Simple because for years it is revolving and the various forces act on its with different levels at different areas.
Fire, derives most of its direction from its source. Like if it is from cigar lighter or airplane, gas will be ejected straight out side and it takes route of its source.
Same with the water by building dams we are able to divert it and on air no one much developed such kind of stuff but still it works.
Anything can be subverted, diverted, bent, rolled and in one word POSSIBLE.

Here: put a balloon in the sink next to a small stream of water coming from the picket and watch the flow become attracted to the balloon. As for fire, light up both ends of a stick and spin it about in the middle so you can see a circle of red light.
And of course, the air can be moved out of the way by more air.

I would put it differently, and say, that another way of looking at the main 4 elements / resources, that constitute the complete Universe, are mass, energy, time and space ! Any avatar, who can control any " one " of these elements / resources can control " all !" (Becomes Master of the Universe, for the period he controls) And vice-versa, too ! Can't control one resource, can't control any resource ! (Becomes slave of the Universe, for the period he can't control)
Can you connect, now, with the importance of " time management " or any other " resource management," given the above-mentioned inputs/postulates? I feel, this also answers the question, as addressed by you...
CATCH:
But, can any human reach the stage, of such perfect and strong control of these highly " imponderable & powerful " resources / elements? Hence, perhaps the use of the word "avatar" by the asker of this question...

They are not elements and an avatar is just a picture. It can't control anything.
