Good question! I chose to be democrat, not because I come from a long-line of diehard ones, but because I have a lot of compassion and empathy for my fellow man. I believe in helping others who can't or don't have the resources to help themselves. All qualities that those before me in my family also have/had.
It's interesting that you mention pre-ordained. A great way to understand this is to read any of George Lakoff's books whereby he distinguishes dems from repubs and why both are what they are and why. Also, check out the website of the thinktank, Rockridge Institute which he is a part of. Here's a reading list and you'll see what I'm talking about:

I choose to be myself. Like the majority, I will vote for the best candidate.
I am inclined to the Democrats, since the Republicans have foisted a series of appalling sociopaths on us throughout my lifetime, and seem bent on preventing any progress for working people. Nixon was the only Republican President who was actually trying, and he was a twisted as an epileptic rattlesnake.
Nontheless, if the Democrats nominate a candidate like Obama, with no qualification beyond ambition and no experience whatever, I can see myself voting for McCain.
What I am saying is that I choose each time I vote whether I am Republican or Democrat. We should all be that way, or both parties will assume they can take us for granted.
Mind you, if I was black or gay I would vote Democrat because the Republicans have a pathetic record on human rights.

I was a liberal democrat in my youth. Then I finished school, went to work and saw reality bigtime. Thats when I became a Republican. Would like to be a libertarian but they never have a shot.

I am neither Democratic nor Republican so I guess it's not preordained.
