Earthquakes generate seismic waves which can be detected with a sensitive instrument called a seismograph.
Advances in seismograph technology have increased our understanding of both earthquakes and the Earth itself.

A machine that measures the movement of the Earth. It is a pencil mounted on very sophisticated springs, rubbing on a paper roll. When an Earthquake happens, the paper and the springs move differently and thus lines are created on the paper reflecting how much the Earth is shaking.

Hope this helps,
Good luck!

Seismic waves travel through the earth as elastic vibrations. A seismometer is an instrument used to record these vibrations and the resulting graph that shows the vibrations is called a seismogram. The main function of the seismograph is to accurately record the motion of the ground during an earthquake. The seismometer must be able to move with the vibrations, yet part of it must remain nearly stationary. This is mastered by isolating the recording device from the rest of the Earth using the inertia.
