I recently bought a new PC from bleeding Dell. Tried to connect to the internet yesterday (via broadband - as i always have done and can still do via my old PC) - My new PC runs bleeding Vista (which I hate) and refused to connect. First messages claimed that the modem wasnt connected - which it was, and then when i tried to start a new connection it asked for a IP password and user name. Can I not just plug in to the internet, connect to IE and surf? Is this Dell trying to force me to sign up to bleeding Tiscali which conveniently arrived installed. Along with a load of other junk I didnt want or ask for, and which has taken ages to uninstall . Hate Dell.

Have yuo not installed the modem on your new pc? If you haven't, then it will not work.

It might be worth visiting the modem's manufacturer's website to see if there are any compatibility issues with Vista and the IP settings.

You may well hate Dell, but chances are it's Vista (blame Microsoft) or you've not installed it correctly.

ok are some things that might be the problem,

first how do u connect to the internet with your old pc?
do you click on an icon to "Manualy connect you"?

if so your connection is callled PPPoE, which means you need a password and username to connect to the internet, sometimes this is saved on the modems software, try calling your ISP for details on your username and password.

2nd, your connection could be DHCP which means that your DSL connection doesnt require a username and password but is hard to configure becouse you still need your pc to recognize the modem and connection software, your ISP can also help you with this.

3rd. what you can do is try pinging a website, try this steps

click on start>Run>type cmd> on the DOS window, type ping www.yahoo.com

if it times out, you have no connection if there is a reply fro the site then your main problem is your Internet explorer...hope this minimizes or fix your problem.

If I were you I would return the computer. If the is not an option then plug Cat5 cable back into Dell goto Start>Control Panel>Internet Properties>LAN Settings and uncheck any boxes and try to connect to the internet. If that doesn't work goto Start>Run and type ipconfig, then try to connect to the internet.
If that doesn't work unplug your modem for 2-3 minutes then plug it back in and try to connect. Unplug the power supply to your modem not the Cat5 cable!!
If you still can't connect to internet email me.

If your ADSL modem is a Thompson Speedtouch 330 then the new driver for Vista was due for release today. There is a beta release available at http://www.speedtouchonline.com/cd.asp?

Contact Dell and tell them of the problem and ask to return it for a refund. Then go buy a computer locally. you would have better luck locally, and have someone that cam help you instead of sending it away when there's a problem
