It depends on what's wrong with it. Try putting it through the wash with a bleach alternative that's advertised for whites. Then if that doesn't do it, I would go ahead and try actual chlorine bleach at one cup per full laundry load. But probably your best bet is to go and buy a new white shirt. They never seem to look good again after they begin to lose the white.

Hello Freddie, well the bast thing for shirts is the good old fashioned bar soap for washing clothes & lots of sun . Soak your shirt in cold water rub in the soap , leave the shirt with the soap on free from water say1/2-1hr. Then back to the cold water give a good rub then add more soap , don´t rinse the soap off, just opo it into the machine straight away. Next hang it outside best wait till you have a nice sunny day as the sun will bleach your shirt whiter than white then natural way

There is two things you can do to revitalize a cotton shirt, one is use White Vinegar, one cup to either a sink full of water or if you are washing in your washing machine you can add 3/4 cup to one cup Vinegar to the hottest water your shirt can stand soak for about one hour then wash and rinse normally, you can add to your rinse water if you like Vinegar this will soften and clean and remove odors and stains from your whole wash. It also whitens. Another way you can whiten your shirt is to use, slices of Lemons in boiling hot water and put your shirt in a pot of the boiling lemon water and boil for about 15-20 mins then allow to cool when cool wring or squeeze out water out of shirt then hang on the line in direct sunlight and the sun will do the rest of the bleaching, if you don't want to do it this way you can rinse after taking out of the pot and squeeze inside a towel then put in your dryer, you can use Vinegar as often as you like it will soften and leave your whites white remove stains and leave them odor free. Good Luck !

I have used this product and its excellent.... Rit dye Fabric whitener/brightener. SAYS :

Rit Whitener boosts detergents' whitening and brightening abilities without the use of bleach. Use periodically to help keep whites white and colors bright.

OR

Rit White-Wash whitens and removes many stains from non-bleachable white fabrics like lingerie and white sportswear. Use regularly to help prevent dinginess or yellowing.

BUT you can only buy it in the USA - here is ONE person selling it : cheap too so dont worry about postage - it wont be a lot ...
