Why they fought? Well Sparta and Athens were long time enemies, and both wanted not only to claim the area as their own but to harass the other.

Basically Athens grew larger and Sparta attacked to stop them. But really there are a vast number of reasons which all compounded to spark the fighting, like with most wars.

Greece wasn't a country way back then like it is today. There was Sparta, Macedonia, Thessaly, Ithaca and a great many others before they were combined by war. The war was probably started because of territory,expansion, greed, power who knows. Or maybe the kings just didn't like eachother as I said who knows.

Spartans were wary of the Athenian power and wanted domination over the Athenians.
