Go pick up some old school blues, like some Buddy Guy, Elmore James, Junior Wells, Howlin Wolf, Memphis Slim, or John Lee Hooker.
Theme-wise, they all focus on the great aspect of being down and out. The narrator's are genuinely sympathetic as many of these musicians have been down and out and can see the error of their ways, but are currently too far gone to do much about it but sing.
If the Blues don't help you get into the feel sorry for yourself mood, it's not worth feeling sorry for yourself.

Lorrie Morgan - Dear Me
Steve Wariner - Don't It Break Your Heart
Stacy Lattisaw - Love On A Two-Way Street
Seal - Kiss From A Rose
Scorpions - When The Smoke Is Going Down
That covers a lot of bases.

"Desperado" just doesn't seem to apply to feeling sorry for yourself. The song suggests it's the Desperado's fault that nobody loves him, that he could rescue himself if he decided to.
I prefer lyrics that don't really place the blame anywhere, that acknowledge that sorrow is a part of life. "So Lonsome I Could Cry" comes to mind. Or even "When Spetember Ends", for something more recent.

There is no better or wrose song as this is a very subjective question. My personal favorite is "Yesterday". It always seems that that is when I was having happier moments. I do know that it will be better in the future but in the right now, this song does express best how I am feeling.
