Most would depend on your occupation? Lawyers, Doctors, Congressmen, Senator are on one end the normal or middle class can vary from 20,000 to 90,000, parts of the country also come into play here, New York would have a higher average than say a small town in the mid-west.

There are way too many reasons why that can't be answered The US is a big place. Some states have money others don't. Some towns have money others don't. You're better off asking what a particular career pays on average.

If by "average" you intend median, the answer would be somewhere around 25,000 dollars. There is, however, an enormous difference, constantly increasing, between the incomes of the rich and the poor in this country.

A fired CEO usually gets 20 times what one of his workers might earn in a lifetime.
