Good luck token and a symbol for Ireland. The shamrock is also reputed to be the item St. Patrick used to explain the Trinity to the Irish (three leaves joining into one stalk). The other main symbol for Ireland is the Harp.

According to legend, St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland. He taught the people about the trinity (father, son and holy spirit) by using a shamrock, which has 3 leaves but is one plant.
