Slew, i take issue with ur statements. You seem to be either ignorant about the conflict and its history or are trying to deliberately mislead people. First of all, Its the Tamils who are the natives of this island. and Not the Sinhala people. Ask any informed history professor and he would say the same thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sinhala_wor...

Tamils belong to the Dravidian people. The Dravidians have been living in south as its native people. whereas the Sinhalese(who came to srilanka only in the 6th century bc) were of aryan people. they were NOT the original inhibitants of India or south asia. They came from the central asian region and moved into india at around 1800 bc . and then to srilankan in the 6th century bc. Tamils have been living here for millenia.

the very fact that there have been many archaeological findings(especially of burial urns) that have corroborated the fact that Tamils lived here LONG before the Sinhalese came to this island. so by any means this island rightfully belongs to the thamils.

add to this the fact that the ealiest known name for this island comes from the Tamil literature of "Tolkappiyam"(3rd century bc) which states that one of the poets whos works are included in the book is "Eelathu poothanthevanar"

Eelathu Poothanthevanar" = Poothanthevanar from Eelam.
Eelam is the tamil name for this Island

This island always had at least 2 kingdoms. many times more than 2. It was NEVER a single country till the British colonized it and merged the two administrative sections for efficiencies sake!!

when the British left the srilankan Tamils, who fought for independence from British agreed that the country should be unified into a single country. cos they believed that Tamils and sinhalese could live together. they were so wrong.

the sinhalese resented the fact that the Tamils were Very highly educated, and were overwhelmingly prominent in business as well.

when the British left, the sinhalese brought laws that said "sinhala would be the only national language"!! this country is a "sinhala buddhist" country. and Tamil has no place in this

All the Tamils, who worked so hard for independence from the British were devastated, by this cowardly backstabbing by the very people they had helped!.

overnight, tamils became second class citizens in their own land!. Tamils who did not know sinhalese were kicked from their jobs.

Huge anti Tamil pogroms and riots broke out all over the country.thousands of Tamils lost their lives, their livelihoods, and their belongings. they houses and businesses were burnt and they were butchered on sight!

they protested peacefully, and the protesters were set upon by bloodthirsty sinhalese mobs and many lost their lives there.

the riots happened again and again in 1956, 1958, 1968, 1971, 1977, 1983 and 1987

more than 75% of Tamils have becomes refugees because of this. tens of thousands of Tamils have lost their lives to these riots, to carpet bombing of villages and temples by the srilankan airforce, to kidnapping, to torture and to assassinations

the tamils had the best library in all of south asia.Housing all their rarest of books and literature(tamil is one of the 8 classical languages in the world and has an unbroken literary tradition going back at least 2500 years). this library, the symbol of tamil pride and history was burnt to the ground

tamil students (even though tamils were only 20% in the new state) made up to around 70% of the engineering and medical students in the srilankan universities. the srilankan government brought a new law that said "tamils have to get FAR higher scores to get into the universities than the sinhalese students , for the exact same exam!!!)

this blatant act, on top of countless other actions by the government finally forced Tamil youth to ask for their rightful land. this has led to the civil war that continues to this day

and most of the western nations simply dont care about this(even though, the UN, Amnesty international, Human rights watch and many other non-governmental organizations around the world) had condemned the srilankan government for their human rights abuses.

but this had fallen on deaf ears as the average sinhalese is not literate enough to see through the "religio-ethnic" propaganda spewn from the mouth of the buddhist monks.

and isn't it hilarious that somehow the Tamils who were living in the Indian subcontinent for millenia(its the Dravidians who built the great Indus valley civilization) were somehow unable to cross the straits(only 20 miles wide) to srilanka ? hahaha

Indus valley artifacts have been found in Egyptian tombs and in Sumerian cities. So they had seafaring ships traversing thousands of miles of Ocean yet were apparently unable to cross 20 miles? LOL.

And the Sinhala language itself , even though its an Indo-European language has So many core Tamil words, showing the extent to which it has been influenced by Tamil.

The sinhalese words for
"mother"
father"
"elder sister"
"younger sister"
"uncle"
"cousin"
"grandmom"
"brother in law"

are Tamil words!! any language, thats been so influenced by another to the extent that it uses words from another language for the closest of Kinship terms is a prime example of being influenced from the start itself by a per-existing language.

The Tamils had their country till the bits colonized the country, and they have every right to have their country back, Especially when they are being subjected to genocide!

and Do post sources for ur comments folks, cos this is not some childish forum where anyone can say whatever comes to his mind without backing it up with facts.:)

We do not wish to degrade the highest forum available for all countries at least to voice their common as well as individual concerns that could be addressed by this august body... But its basic weakness of having to tread the whims of super powers does restrict its role in major issues of political concern...

It is true that the problems of Sri Lanka does not attract much international interest, probably because there are more enduring conflicts hitting the headlines day in day out (such as the Palestine issue) that are of consequence to a super power... Problems of Asian and African countries do not normally attract the concerns of average western govts... The fate of Tibet, the dictatorship in Tibet and the more recent chaos in Nepal etc affecting the people are not at all addressed...

In fact most developing countries have lost confidence in the UN role in mitigating political issues, though its role in other humanitarian, scientific or other fields may be more satisfying..

honestly no longer! that's real undemanding. SL has each of the right to chosen whoever the captain they want. And that replaced into what precisely they did. It replaced into nicely in the regulations. If SL did some thing thoroughly unorthodox including giving the captaincy to someone like Thirimanne to make certain that if there replaced right into a suspension, no accurate participant replaced into gonna be a sufferer then that could want to were thoroughly adverse to the sportsmanship of the game. yet they did not do this. thus, replaced into there a suspension nevertheless Sl may have ignored Sangakkara yet another accurate participant. So a wise bypass without breaking the sportsmanship of the game.

I believe in intervening in Sri Lanka. I think we should help capture terrorist groups like the Tamil tiger and return the Tamils to India and let the Sri Lankans live in peace. Most Americans don't even know where Sri Lanka is much less know there is a war there.
