In a homogenous substance, all particles are alike. If it is heterogenous, there are differencies in it.
Imagine solving sugar into water. When it is solved, your substance is homogenous because it is the same everywhere. But if you were to put some stones into it, you'd get a heterogenous substanse, because you'll have sum clumps of silicates (That's what stones are usualy made of) in the otherwise homogenous water-sugar-solution.

homogeneity means the same (from homo) throughout, while heterogeneity means "consisting of different (from hetero) items"
homogeneous and heterogeneous is used in many fields.
in chemistry: A heterogeneous compound, mixture, reaction or other such object is one that consists of many different items, which are often not easily sorted or separated, though they are clearly distinct, while a homogeneous compound is the opposite. the term is also used in statistics, mathematics, and genetics

Homogeneous is when something is a mix, but it is consistant thoughout, meaning you never have to shake it, it will not separate upon sitting. Milk is a good example for homogeny.
Heterogeneous is when something is a mix, but is not consistant throughout, meaning you MUST shake it. An oil and water mix is a good example, when you shake it, it's pretty well mixed, but if you just let it sit there, it separates. Orange juice/ Pineapple Juice are good examples of heterogeneous.
Homo means same.
Hetero means different.
